Denny Dwight Baughman

Denny Baughman, 74, of Unionville, Missouri, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.  Denny had been in failing health the past several months.

Denny Dwight Baughman was born in Centerville, Iowa, on December 15, 1947, the son of Richard and Sara Joann (Cook) Baughman.  Denny grew up on the farm near Omaha, Missouri, where he enjoyed riding horses, hunting, fishing, and welding when not doing farm work.  He attended Shoney rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Unionville High School in 1965.  He participated in football, track, and FFA in high school.  Denny then attended Centerville (Indian Hills) Community College in Centerville, Iowa.  He enlisted in the United States army on March 16, 1968, and served one year near the DMZ in South Korea during the Vietnam era.  He was discharged on January 19, 1971, and returned to college while he worked various jobs, most related to maintenance and sales. Denny married Marie Dianne Van Dorin at the Methodist Church in Moravia, Iowa, on January 27, 1973. They began married life in Seymour, Iowa, where Denny worked for L & M Tire and Carmer’s in Centerville.

Denny and Marie moved to Unionville in 1974 where Denny managed the Burdman Auto Parts store for three years.  When Denny became dispatcher for Siegel Heavy Hauling Company, associated with Missouri Mining, they moved to acreage west of Omaha. He raised Percheron horses, as well as hogs, sheep, and calves when they lived on the farm.  He enjoyed gardening throughout his life. He then worked for Farm and Home in Centerville, Putnam County R-1 Schools, and Wal-Mart in both Centerville and Kirksville.  Denny later worked part-time with his daughter Megan when she owned Country Peddler flowers and gifts in Unionville.  He was saved and baptized at Omaha Baptist Church when a youngster and later joined Unionville First Christian Church.

Denny is survived by his wife, Marie, and daughter Megan (Darin) Lunsford of Green City, Missouri.  His two grandsons are Brody & Kasey Lunsford.  He is also survived by a brother, Bruce (Ann) Baughman of Unionville.  His nieces and nephews are Brandon Baughman, Nathan Baughman, Nicole Waugh, Brooke Marvin, Erin Mullins, and Rachel Mullins.  He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Annette (Patrick) Mullins of Skidmore, Missouri, and many cousins and friends.

Denny was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, Sylvan & Carolyn Van Dorin; his maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Mary Cook; his paternal grandparents, Charlie and Laura Baughman; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Debbie & John Gaither.

Funeral services for Denny Baughman will be at Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home in Unionville at 11:00 am Saturday, March 19, 2022, with visitation one hour prior to the service.  Inurnment will be at a later date at the Mitchell Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the PC Café & Resource Center or the American Legion Post #34 and may be entrusted with Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27 th St., Unionville, MO  63565.
