A born farmer, Laverne grew up on the farm and devoted his life to agriculture, making his living from the very soil that shaped him. Farming was not simply his occupation, but a way of life that he cherished and honored with unwavering dedication. Beyond his work on the farm, Laverne appreciated the outdoors and enjoyed taking photographs, watching wildlife, and listening to trains as they rolled by. These simple pleasures reflected his thoughtful nature and love for the land surrounding him.
Laverne was known for his strong personality and clear opinions on life. He often shared words of wisdom that reflected the heart of his character: express love freely to family and friends, respect and appreciate the beauty of the land, honor God with all one’s might, and speak with conviction.
Throughout his life, Laverne was blessed with many friendships and was known as a loyal and true friend, qualities that brought comfort and strength to those who knew him. His proudest accomplishments were not only tied to his work, but also to the relationships he built and nurtured over the years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Lela (Rouse) Gerhold; his son, Matthew Gerhold (Peggy); his grandson, John “JT” Gerhold; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Vernelle Gerhold, and his sister, Shirley Baker.
A graveside service to honor Laverne’s memory will be held on June 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Park View Memorial Gardens, 2100 E. Shepherd Avenue, Kirksville, Missouri. Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance.
