Jay Donald Couchman

Jay Donald Couchman passed away suddenly at his home of natural causes on Tuesday, May 5 th , 2020.

Jay Couchman was born in Powersville, MO on January 8 th , 1931, the son of Victor and Vera (Harbert) Couchman.  He attended country schools in Iowa and Missouri and graduated from Unionville High School in 1949.  Jay moved to Unionville as a youngster and worked as a gas station attendant to help his family financially.  He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict from April 15, 1952 – January 14, 1954.  On June 15 th , 1958, Jay married Gloria Collins in Unionville, MO, and 3 children were born to this union.

Jay Couchman spent his entire life working with his hands to build and create any task put before him.  He worked many years as a carpenter and later owned and operated Couchman Plumbing and Electric. There wasn’t a thing Jay could not fix and to the highest standards.  Jay always said he had the best customers in the world.  He was an honest and hardworking man.  He loved listening to country music and visiting with people whether he knew them or not.  He had an ornery side and a great sense of humor.  Jay loved his family and was so proud of all his grandkids.

Jay is survived by his wife, Gloria of the home and three children, son, Donald Couchman and daughters, Linnette Caley and husband Tom and Susan Grimm and husband Gary all of Unionville, MO.  Jay’s surviving grandchildren are Nicole Wright, Lindsey Summers, Shawn Caley and wife Robin, Sara Collins and husband Michael, Troy Couchman and wife Elizabeth, Molly Crawford and husband Ben, Ty Couchman and wife Breanna, Gary Grimm and Hannah Grimm.  Jay’s surviving great grandchildren are Daysha Caley, Johnathan, Tyson, and Christian Summers, Kylie Wright, Asher, Ember, Greyson, and Celia Crawford, Oliver Caley, Bowen and Emmitt Couchman, Eden, Ruthie, and Russell Couchman, and Hadwin and Wendell Collins.  Jay is also survived by a sister-in-law, Karan and a brother-in-law, Richard and wife Julia.

In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Couchman, a brother, Norman Couchman, and a sister, Carolyn Clark.

Memorials are suggested to the Unionville Cemetery or the American Legion Post #34 and may be entrusted to the Playle and Collins Family Funeral Home, 709 S. 27th St., Unionville, MO  63565.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.
