Robert Wayne Ellis

Kirksville, MO

Robert Wayne Ellis, affectionately known as Wayne, passed away on July 6, 2026, in Columbia, Missouri, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans' Hospital, at the age of 82. Born on December 17, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa, Wayne’s life was marked by a steadfast commitment to his family, his work, his country, and his enduring passions for the natural world and adventure.

Wayne’s early years in Ottumwa shaped the hard-working and caring man he would become. Following his graduation in 1973 from Northeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, he pursued a varied and admirable career that reflected his diverse interests and sense of responsibility. Wayne owned Acme Drywall and worked across numerous construction roles, becoming known for his integrity and diligence. He later served as a quality assurance inspector, before dedicating eighteen impactful years as an Environmental Public Health Specialist with the Adair County Health Department, from which he retired in 2008.

A proud patriot, Wayne served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966, including tours in the Vietnam War. His service exemplified his deep sense of duty and resilience, traits that would continue to guide him throughout his life.

Wayne’s zest for life found its fullest expression in his many hobbies and adventures. He loved to hunt and fish, and he found particular joy in truck pulling and mud racing, whether behind the wheel or cheering from the sidelines. The outdoors called to him, and he embraced exploration, whether it meant encountering bighorn sheep and donkeys on his excursions or discovering new paths on his four-wheeler and golf cart. Evenings often found Wayne at his computer enjoying a quiet game of solitaire, or at the table engaged in friendly competition over cards, pitch and Texas Hold'em were among his favorites.

At the heart of all Wayne did was his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Doris Ellis, who stood steadfastly by his side. His memory will be cherished by his three bonus sons: Mark (CIndy) Salsberry, Kevin (Theresa) Salsberry, and Christopher (Michael) Salsberry. Wayne also leaves behind a proud legacy in his grandchildren: Chaz (Mistie) Salsberry, Travis (Taylor) Salsberry, Tanner (Kelli) Salsberry, Erica (Felipe) Sauceda, and Kierra Salsberry; and in his great-grandchildren: Marianah Sauceda, Adriel Sauceda, Aurelia Sauceda, Kolbie Salsberry, Eisley Salsberry, Demi Salsberry, and Devin Salsberry. He also leaves behind a beloved niece, Lori.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marjorie (Dowd) Ellis; his grandmother, Edna Kellison; and his sister, Connie Noe.

Wayne was, above all else, a loving man who treasured time spent with his family. Those who knew him will remember his warmth, his humor, and his readiness for camaraderie and adventure. His presence leaves a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of sharing life’s journey with him.
