Russell Burnell Helton, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home in Kirksville, Missouri, surrounded by his loved ones on July 19, 2025. Born on November 13, 1934, in Kirksville, Burnell lived a full and vibrant life, dedicated to his family and community.
After graduating from Brashear High School in 1952, Burnell began his career at Producers Creamery in Kirksville before devoting over four decades of service as President of TH&N Electric Inc. from 1957 until his retirement in 2002. He also ran Shelton Roofing and Sheet Metal during his tenure. His unmatched ability to fix anything around him was a testament to his resourceful nature and strong work ethic.
In May of 1953, Burnell married the love of his life, Frances Scott. Their marriage endured until her passing from a tragic accident in 2017, a profound loss that deeply affected his life. Together, they created a loving home and raised two wonderful children, Stephen (Faith) Helton and Katheryn Helton. Burnell and Frances spent many days at their cabin at Spring Lake entertaining family and friends. Once the cabin was sold, they spent the cold Missouri winters at their home in Mesa, AZ. and enjoyed the warmer weather and many other family and friends that visited their home. Burnell took immense pride in his family, finding joy in every moment spent with them, especially with his granddaughter, Shelly Helton, and his great-grandsons.
Burnell was an active member of his community, engaging in organizations such as the Masons, El Kadir Shrine, Scottish Rite, and Elks. His involvement in the Grand Lodge Free Masonry lodge 366, the El Kadir Moila Shrine Club, the El Kadir Cycle Patrol and attaining the esteemed 32nd Degree Scottish Rite reflected his commitment to service and brotherhood. He also had the honor of belonging to the IBEW Union 350, showcasing his dedication to his trade and colleagues.
An avid lover of gardening and yard work, Burnell found solace and satisfaction in nurturing plants and beautifying his surroundings. In Burnell’s passing, he leaves a significant void in the hearts of his surviving family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Emery and Mary Helton; his beloved wife, Frances Helton; his sisters, Mary Mauck and Treva Byers; and his brothers, Albert and Harley Helton.
